Paid Research Studies and User Testing: Higher-Paying Alternatives to Surveys (2026)

By the Reward Land teamUpdated 28 October 20268 min read

If you've taken paid surveys for a while, you've probably noticed the ceiling. However quickly you work, a survey pays by the minute, and the minutes don't pay much. Paid research studies and user tests are the most natural next step: the same idea of being paid for your opinion and behaviour, with better pay for more involved work.

In short

The four kinds of paid research

1. Online research studies

Universities and companies run studies online: questionnaires, decision-making tasks, short experiments. They're like surveys but often longer and more carefully designed, and some study platforms set a minimum hourly rate that researchers must pay. Studies tend to fill up fast once they're posted.

2. Recorded user tests

You're asked to use a website or app while thinking out loud, and your screen and voice are recorded. A test might be "find a pair of running shoes under $80 and add them to your basket." Tests are usually short, often 10 to 30 minutes, and pay well for the time.

3. Live interviews

A researcher talks to you one-to-one, usually over a video call, about how you use a product or make a decision. They're scheduled in advance, run 30 to 60 minutes, and are among the best-paid options.

4. Focus groups

A small group discusses a product, advert or idea with a moderator, online or in person. They're less frequent and often look for specific types of people, but pay well when you're picked.

The catch: screeners

Like surveys, every test looks for specific people, so each begins with a short screener. Many people who try user testing are disappointed at first because they're turned down a lot. Some of that is luck, but much of it comes down to your profile, your speed and the quality of your first tests.

Interviews and focus groups

Live sessions pay best, but they're the least familiar for most people. Knowing what to expect, from the scheduling email to the consent form, makes them much less daunting.

A word on "test AI and earn" offers

As AI tools have spread, so have offers promising big money for testing them. Some AI evaluation work is real. Plenty of these offers are scams that end with you paying them.

Frequently asked questions

Do user tests pay more than surveys?
Usually, per hour. A short user test often pays several times what a survey pays for the same time, but tests are offered less often and each has its own screener.
Do I need a webcam for user testing?
Not always. Many tests only record your screen and voice. Some, especially live interviews, ask for a webcam too. Each test says what it needs.
Are paid focus groups legitimate?
Many are. Market research firms and universities pay people for their opinions in group discussions. Real ones never ask you to pay to take part.
How often will I get user tests?
It varies a lot. Some people get several a week, others a few a month. It depends on your profile, country, device and how quickly you respond to invitations.
