Your First $100 From Side Income: A Realistic 30-Day Plan
The first $100 is the hardest. You don't know what works for you yet, and every option looks either too small or too big. This plan uses things you already have, costs nothing up front, and gives you a real sense of what's worth your time by the end of the month. It won't work the same for everyone, but it's a realistic place to start.
Week 1: Sell what you don't use
Selling things you already own is the quickest route to real money, because there's no waiting for invitations or approval.
- Walk through your home and pick five to ten things you haven't used in a year: clothes, electronics, books, kitchen gadgets, furniture.
- Photograph each one in daylight against a plain background.
- Check what similar items actually sold for, not what they're listed at, and price slightly below.
- List them on one or two local or online marketplaces.
Week 2: Set up your small-gap earners
- Create a separate email address for side income. Our guide to keeping sign-ups tidy takes about half an hour.
- Join one or two survey sites and one research study platform, after running each through our five-point safety check.
- Fill in your profiles completely, so you're matched with surveys you qualify for.
- Use commutes and breaks for surveys and studies. Don't let them take over your evenings.
Week 3: Try one thing with a person in it
Pick one local or skill-based job and try it once: walking a neighbour's dog, helping someone move, an hour of tutoring, a small freelance task for someone you know. Tell a few people you're available. Word of mouth is still how most small local jobs start.
Week 4: Review and decide
Look back at the month with a simple money log: what each thing earned, and how long it took. Then decide what to keep, what to drop and what to do more of.
How it might add up
| Source | Example | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Selling | 4 items at about $15 each | $60 |
| Surveys and studies | Short sessions over three weeks | $15 |
| One local job | A weekend of pet sitting | $30 |
| Total | $105 |
Notice where most of it came from. In a first month, selling and one-off local work usually beat surveys. Surveys and studies are steady and convenient, but small. Knowing that is exactly what this month is for.
What not to do
- Don't pay for a course, starter kit or membership in your first month.
- Don't sign up for ten sites at once. Two or three you actually use beat ten you forget.
- Don't judge everything on the first week. Some things take a little while to pick up.
